May 2009 a federal jury awarded a company called i4i Ltd $200 million for patent damages against Microsoft. Then today the judge issued a permanent injunction against the sale of Word 2003 & 2007. Apparently i4i has a patent on how xml files are read and these versions of Word use their method for parsing xml files. The company chairman states that he is not trying to cause problems or stop Microsoft from selling word, but he would just like for his company to be compensated where they legally deserve it. I completely agree that his company should be compensated, they actually had a patent for crying out loud. Microsoft is appealing the decision, they have 60 days before they have to stop selling it.
